Why we ask parents to stay in the room

Therapist in Chennai coaching a parent through an activity with their toddler

Some centres send parents to a waiting area. We usually do the opposite, and there is a reason.

One hour cannot compete with a week

Even three sessions a week is a small share of your child's waking time. The families who see the fastest change are the ones running the same strategies between visits.

Watching is not the same as being coached

So we hand the activity over mid-session. You try it, we adjust your timing or prompting on the spot, and you leave able to do it rather than able to describe it.

When we do work separately

Some children perform better initially without a parent present, and some goals, group work, school modelling, need peers instead. In those cases we set aside feedback time so nothing is a mystery to you.
