Behaviour Modification Therapy
Understanding behaviour, teaching functional skills, and supporting positive participation.
Behaviour is a form of communication. Children may show challenging behaviours due to communication difficulties, sensory needs, emotional regulation, learning demands, or limited coping skills.
Our intervention is guided by evidence-informed principles, including approaches from Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA). Strategies are selected according to each child's developmental level, strengths, abilities, motivation, environment, family priorities, and individual needs.
Our goal is not simply to stop challenging behaviour, but to teach appropriate communication, self-regulation, social, learning, and daily living skills.

Who Can Benefit?
Behaviour Modification Therapy may support children who experience:
- Tantrums or emotional outbursts
- Hitting, kicking, biting, or pinching
- Self-injurious or disruptive behaviour
- Hyperactivity and impulsivity
- Limited attention or poor sitting tolerance
- Difficulty following instructions
- Difficulty waiting or accepting “no”
- Difficulty moving between activities
- Avoidance of learning or self-care tasks
- Poor frustration tolerance
- Social-boundary difficulties
- Difficulty communicating their needs
Intervention is planned according to the child's individual needs and the function of the behaviour, rather than diagnosis alone.
Our Behaviour Support Process
1. Parent Consultation
We discuss the child's behaviour, communication, development, routines, strengths, preferences, and family concerns.
2. Behavioural Observation
The child is observed during play, learning activities, communication, social interaction, transitions, and daily routines.
3. ABC Behaviour Analysis
This helps us identify behavioural patterns and possible triggers.
We examine:
- Antecedent: What happened before the behaviour?
- Behaviour: What exactly did the child do?
- Consequence: What happened immediately afterwards?
4. Functional Behaviour Assessment
We assess whether the behaviour may be used to:
- Gain attention
- Escape or avoid a task
- Obtain a preferred item or activity
- Meet a sensory need
- Communicate pain, discomfort, frustration, or another need
5. Individualised Behaviour Support Plan
A personalised plan is developed with measurable goals, prevention strategies, replacement skills, reinforcement methods, and progress-monitoring procedures.
Intervention and Progress Monitoring
The intervention plan is implemented through structured, positive, and developmentally appropriate activities.
Progress may be measured using:
- Frequency of behaviour
- Duration and intensity of behaviour
- Level of prompting required
- Time taken to respond
- Number of completed activities
- Percentage of successful responses
- Independent use of replacement skills
- Participation across different settings
The plan is regularly reviewed and adjusted according to the child's response and progress.
Behaviour Modification Techniques
Depending on the child's needs, intervention may include:
- Positive reinforcement: Encouraging appropriate behaviour through praise, tokens, or preferred activities.
- Functional Communication Training: Teaching the child to request help, a break, attention, or preferred items appropriately.
- Replacement behaviour: Teaching a safer and more functional response instead of challenging behaviour.
- Prompting and prompt fading: Providing support and gradually reducing it as independence develops.
- Modelling and imitation: Demonstrating appropriate actions for the child to observe and copy.
- Shaping: Reinforcing small steps towards a final skill.
- Task analysis and chaining: Breaking complex activities into smaller, teachable steps.
- Token reinforcement: Providing tokens or stars that can be exchanged for a preferred reward.
- Visual supports: Using schedules, First-Then boards, timers, choice boards, and emotion charts.
- Differential reinforcement: Reinforcing an appropriate alternative to the challenging behaviour.
- Antecedent-based intervention: Adjusting triggers, tasks, routines, or environments before behaviour occurs.
- Self-management: Teaching children to recognise, monitor, and regulate their own behaviour.
- Generalisation: Helping children use their skills with different people and in different environments.
