Calmer mornings: a simple sensory routine before school
2 September 2026 · 4 min read

Mornings ask a child to wake, dress, eat, tolerate noise and separate from you, often within forty minutes. A short, predictable routine makes that manageable.
Start with movement, not instructions
Five minutes of pushing, pulling, jumping or big squeezes helps many children organise themselves. It is far more effective than repeating instructions to a body that is not ready yet.
Make the sequence visible
Four or five picture cards in order: toilet, dress, eat, bag, shoes, remove the need to remember and reduce the arguing. Your child moves each card as it is finished.
Reduce the sensory load you can control
Seamless socks, softer lighting, less background television, clothes chosen the night before. Small removals free up the tolerance your child needs for the parts that cannot change.
Keep the same order every day
Predictability is the active ingredient. Give any new routine two weeks before you judge it, and tell us what you notice so we can adjust it in session.
